LA Mission
After falling 6-4 to Los Angeles Mission College on Thursday, Citrus College Baseball bounced back, closing out the series with a hard-fought 6-4 victory on Saturday.
The Owls now stand at 9-18 on the season and 4-5 in conference play, while LA Mission College drops to 9-19 overall with an identical 4-5 conference record.
In game two of the series at LA Mission College, the Owls managed nine hits but could only push across single runs in the third, sixth, seventh, and ninth innings. Meanwhile, the Eagles capitalized on their opportunities, scoring six runs on nine hits to secure the win.
Ezekiel Escalera led the charge for Citrus, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Nathan Hellein contributed a solid 2-for-3 performance with an RBI, while Chase Bernal added a 2-for-4 outing with two runs scored. Dustin Yela also chipped in, going 1-for-4 with a run and a walk. On the mound, Isaac Gonzales delivered six innings of work, striking out three while allowing three runs.
Today's series finale did not start in Citrus' favor, as the Owls fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first. However, they quickly responded, taking advantage of an Eagles error to score Ezekiel Escalera before Dustin Yela drove in Danyal Jenkins with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.
LA Mission tied things up in the third, but Citrus took control in the fourth. Yela came through again with a hard-hit two-RBI single, followed by a Kirk Felikian II double that brought Yela home, pushing the Owls ahead 5-2. Citrus tacked on an insurance run in the seventh before turning to their bullpen to seal the win.
Dustin Yela was solid at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two stolen bases, and a run scored. Escalera also shined, going 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk. On the mound, Isaiah Santoyo (W, 2-4) delivered five solid innings, striking out three while allowing just two runs. Jonathan Maldonado followed with two innings of relief, surrendering only three hits and one run. Reece Harney shut the door, pitching the final two innings to earn the save, striking out two in the process.
Citrus College will hit the road to open a three-game conference series against Antelope Valley College on Tuesday, April 1. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
