XCountry Western State Conference Championship Recap

The Eagles capped off their 2019 season on October 25th in San Luis Obispo at the Western State Conference Championships.

The women’s team didn’t have enough athletes to score, but that doesn’t mean that success didn’t come their way. Two of the three runners that raced will be moving on to the SoCal Regional Championships on November 9th.

The first of those is Ruth Cobieya. She finished in 18th with a time of 22:53. She was the second individual to cross the finish line that didn’t have a team qualifying her for the regional meet. Her teammate Janice Salazar finished ten spots back of Cobieya in 28th and was the third individual to cross the line without a team. She gets to join her teammate in San Diego in two weeks.

Yense "Suzette" Sanchez was the third runner for the Eagles. She finished in 50th and ran a time of 27:59. Her time is an improvement from earlier this season when she raced at the Tour de Cuesta.

The men’s team finished with a 10th place finish in their first year of competition. Yerson Chavez was the top finisher for the Eagles finishing in 47th place on the afternoon. Chavez ran 26:01 and had one of this best races strategically.

Behind him was Kieran Burmester who continued his strong racing in 2019. Burmester finished in 56th place and crossed the finish line with a time of 26:58. The third scorer for Mission was Abraham Cota. He crossed the line 59th place and only 12 seconds back of Burmester making for a strong scoring combination.

Antionio "Tony" Gutierrez was the number four runner for the Eagles and finished in 73rd place. He had a time of 29:04. Jorge Macias moved into the scoring for the Eagles this week as he was the fifth-place runner for the Eagles. He was 81st and finished with a time of 31:05.

The Eagles in total scored 244 points and were just 32 points back of the ninth-place team, Ventura College. The men will need to wait a week to see if they receive an at large spot at SoCal Regionals.

The aforementioned Cobieya and Salazar will race at 10:00 AM on November 9th at Mission Bay Park in San Diego. We will continue to keep you updated if any of the men or the men’s team qualify for the regional meet.
