Soccer shuts out San Bernardino
Men's soccer started off its week with a shutout over San Bernardino Valley on Monday. The 2-0 win boosted the Eagles' record to 3-4-2 and dropped the Wolverines to 4-5.

The excitement happened in the first half, when sophomore forward Javier Moran took a shot to the corner of the net for the Eagles' first goal in the 29th minute.

Just before the end of the half, freshman midfielder Jorge Rojas took advantage of the SBVC goalie's false anticipation and placed a perfect shot in the 42nd minute. Rojas is responsible for 5 of the 6 goals the Eagles have scored this season.

Defensively, Mission kept San Bernardino from gaining any momentum. Head coach Julio Castillo credits freshman defender Elijah Patyk's timing and decision-making on the field as major factors in the shutout.

Sophomore goalie Esteban Chavez contributed nine saves at the net to the Wolverines' 19 failed shots.

With only two games left until conference play begins, Coach Castillo has high hopes for the team's Western State run.

"The biggest thing for us right now is consistency," Castillo said. "We've been playing well, but we haven't been able to score. So if we're able to find the net it'll carry us through the rest of the season."

The Eagles play next at Bakersfield College on Friday, Sept. 29, at 5 p.m.
